Today, February 20, 2013, The National List published the white paper on debt collection law in Idaho, written by attorneys Jeffrey M. Wilson and Christopher R. Moore, and their law firm Wilson & McColl. The firm has been a member of The National List since 1989.
The firm of Wilson & McColl is located in Idaho’s beautiful capital city of Boise. They practice law throughout the state of Idaho, which is known as the Gem state because nearly every type of gemstone has been found there. The firm handles legal matters in the following practice areas: Commercial Transactions, Collections, Creditors Rights, Bankruptcy, General Civil Practice, Real Property, Insurance, Commercial Litigation, and Business Matters. Over 80 percent of the practice is dedicated to debt collection.
Managing Partner Jeffrey M. Wilson is a graduate of Ohio Northern University College of Law and was admitted to the Idaho Bar in 1979. Jeffrey has been active within the Idaho legal community during his entire career, including serving as Commissioner, and later President of the Idaho State Bar. He has worked in the field of debt collection and creditor’s rights for over 25 years. He received the award for Mountain States Super Lawyer for Creditor’s Rights. He is a member of the Idaho State Bar and is active in the Commercial Law and Bankruptcy sections. He is also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) and the Commercial Law League of America (CLLA).
Jeffery mentioned two things he has learned from collecting debt: 1) “The current economic climate has hit everyone (not just debtors) extremely hard.” 2) “Creditors are sometimes subject to a bad reputation that often isn’t warranted. Most creditors understand the financial difficulties that consumer and businesses are going through, and they are willing to work with debtors in addressing their obligations.”
One thing creditors need to know that makes debt collection unique in Idaho is, “In general, Judgments in Idaho last for five years and can be renewed for an additional five years. This often makes it difficult for debtors to escape their obligations.”
The firm of Wilson and McColl is dedicated to actively serving the community. Firm attorneys continually represent pro-bono, underprivileged clients. Additionally, Firm employees volunteer with the Treasure Valley Down Syndrome Association, Idaho’s River Discovery for cancer survivors, and the Special Olympics.
When he’s not working, Jeffrey enjoys spending time in Idaho’s scenic mountain country. He is married and has three children and three grandchildren.
Associate Attorney Christopher R. Moore graduated from Willamette University College of Law and was admitted to the Idaho Bar in 2011.
